As it was in the girls’ Calhoun County tournament, Donoho, Oxford advance to final of boys’ 2023 version of a county tournament

By East Alabama Sports Today

OXFORD — Oxford and Donoho played for the girls’ Calhoun County soccer championship Thursday, and they’ll play for the boys’ version Saturday.

Both teams advanced in Friday’s semifinals at Oxford High School, with Donoho beating Jacksonville 3-1 and Oxford beating White Plains 3-1.

They’ll play Saturday at 7 p.m. on Oxford’s Lamar Field.

Donoho’s girls beat Oxford 3-0 in Thursday’s county final. There weren’t enough boys’ teams to have a county tourney this year, so the five remaining teams organized a de facto county tournament to honor Crook, the former Weaver player who died in December of 2020.

The semifinals and finals were moved to Oxford High School because Lamar Field has artificial turf. Rain is forecast for Saturday.

Donoho got goals from Trey Alexander, Brice Downey and reigning All-Calhoun County player of the year Drew Williamson to advance against Jacksonville.

Elijah Stinson scored for Jacksonville.

Oxford won with second-half goals from Yair Gutierrez, Aldo Gutierrez and Tristen Koontz. Aldo Guiterrez’s goal came on a penalty kick, and Raynieri Zuniga assisted Koontz’s goal.

Donoho won the last official boys’ Calhoun County tourney, beating Oxford 3-1. It marked Donoho’s first county title in boys’ soccer since the inaugural county tournament, in 2017. Oxford won in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

There was no 2020 county tourney because of COVID-19.
