Edwards shoots 3-under-par 68, low medalist as White Plains wins Chesley Oaks Invitational; Alexandria’s Allen pitches no-hitter; Oxford’s Harrison pitches one-hitter

HOLLY POND — White Plains’ boys look primed to defend their Calhoun County golf title.

Sawyer Edwards was low medalist with a 3-under par 68, and the WIldcats shot an even-par 284 to win the Chesley Oaks Invitational Tuesday at Chesley Oaks Golf Course.

The victory comes just ahead of Wednesday’s Oxford Invitational at Cider Ridge. The field includes White Plains, Alexandria at Oxford.

The Calhoun County tournament tees off Friday morning at Pine Hill Country Club,

“We’re playing really good,” White Plains coach Chris Randall said. “I hope it gives a lot of confidence going into the county tournament.”

The Wildcats’ victory in the Chesley Oaks tourney marked their second tourney victory this season. The other tourney they won was the Cross Creek Invitational in Cullman.

White Plains’ scorers Tuesday also featured Wyatt Cotney, who shot a 1-under 70. Dalton Faulkner and Cam Hurst each shot 73.

Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter shot 72 and finished fourth place.

Baseball

ALEXANDRIA 7, LINCOLN 0: At Lincoln, Andrew Allen pitched a no-hitter, and Alexandria moved to within one victory of clinching the Class 5A, Area 12 title.

Allen struck out 12 batters. His one walk came in the second inning. He pitched 61 strikes in 87 overall pitches.

At the plate, Ty Brown and Eli Barnes each had a hit and two RBIs. Samuel Henegar went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, and Seth Johnson drove in a run.

OXFORD 4, FORT PAYNE 0: Hayes Harrison came within one strike of a no-hitter, and Oxford won in Class 6A, Area 13 play.

Harrison faced two batters more than the minimum, thanks to an error and and a two-out, two-strike single by Blake Griggs in the seventh inning. Brannon Oliver grounded into a fielder’s choice on the next at bat to end the game.

Harrison struck out nine batters with 57 strikes in 79 pitches. The game ended in an hour and nine minutes,

Harrison also had an RBI.

At the plate, Peyton Watts doubled twice with an RBI and two runs. Carter Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

PIEDMONT 19, SAKS 1: It was Jack Hayes kind of day for Piedmont.

The senior went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, double, two runs and seven RBIs as the Bulldogs rolled to victory in Class 3A, Area 10 play.

His home run highlighted Piedmont’s 6-run fourth inning.

Kale Austin also swung a productive bat, going 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.

Jake Austin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Brodie Homesley and Jonah Pike drove in a run apiece.

Sloan Smith and Max Hanson combined to hold Saks to five hits and no earned runs and six strikeouts.

JACKSONVILLE 18, WHITE PLAINS 5: In 4A, Area 9 play, Gavin Peeler had three doubles and six RBIs to lead Jacksonville’s offensive attack. He went 5-for-5.

Drew Pridgen went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, and Drake Loggins went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Miles Austin led White Plains, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

DONOHO 10, GASTON 0: Peyton Webb pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks as the Falcons improved to 13-1.

Lucas Elliott led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Nic Thompson went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI, and Marcus Lawler was 1-for-4 with three runs. Blake Sewell had a triple, two runs and an RBI.

MUNFORD 3, HANDLEY 2: In a 4A, Area 8 game at Handley, Austin Wynn was hit by a pitch on a full count with bases loaded to end it.

Alex Petty pitched a complete game, limiting Handley to three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Mason Brewer went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Wynn also had two hits with an RBI, and Brody Stephens drove in a run.

RAGLAND 12, JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 2: In Class 1A, Area 1 play, Jake Donaldson and Skyler Barber drove in three runs apiece for Ragland. Donaldson went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Barner was 3-for-4 with a run.

The Purple Devils also got three hits from Ethan Courtney.

Donaldson also pitched five innings, allowing seven hits, no earned runs and three walks with six strikeouts. Casey Phillips pitched one inning of perfect relief with two strikeouts.

Travis Barnhill led JCA, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Ethan Fair was 2-for-3.

PLEASANT VALLEY 8, RANBUNE 7: The Raiders rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to win on senior night in Class 2A, Area 13 play. Further details were not available.
