Piedmont gets strong start to Spring Experience with victories over Handley, Fayetteville; Oxford rolls to 12-0 victory over Golden (Colo.)

OXFORD — The start to Piedmont’s Spring Experience was a good one.

Jack Hayes and Cole Austin pitched gems, and the Bulldogs beat Fayetteville 12-1 and Handley 10-0 in back-to-back games Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.

The games were part of Oxford’s annual spring-break showcase.

Austin and Hayes pitched five innings complete games. Austin allowed four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts against Fayetteville. Hayes pitched a three hitter with one walk and five strikeouts against Handley.

Piedmont (10-4) got several big offensive performances on the day.

Against Fayetteville, McClane Mohon and Max Hanson had three hits and three runs apiece. Hanson had an RBI.

Hayes went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. 

Kale Austin and Cole Wilson each had two hits and two RBIs, and Jake Austin had two hits with an RBI. Cole Austin and Trevor Pike each had a hit and an RBI.

Hayes, Mohon and Kale Austin each hit a double.

Against Handley, Hanson went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Cole Wilson went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.

Hayes, Jake Austin and Sloan Smith drove in a run apiece.

OXFORD 12, GOLDEN (Colo.) 0: Hudson Gilman and Roby Brooks combined to hold Golden to four hits and strike out seven batters with no walks for Oxford (17-4).

Hayes Harrison led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run and five RBIs.

Gilman and Peyton Watts each had two hits. Gilman had a triple and drove in two runs, and Watts had an RBI and four runs.

Trace Adams had a double and two RBIs.
