Jacksonville’s Broom, Piedmont’s Odam selected to play in Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game; Piedmont, Ragland score victories in baseball; Ohatchee wins one, loses one

Jacksonville’s John Broom and Piedmont’s Alex Odam have been selected to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star basketball game.

For Broom, it’s a chance to play on his future home court.

The game is set for March 11 at the University of South Alabama’s Pete Mitchell Center. Broom signed to play for South Alabama.

Broom and Odam were among 12 players selected for the boys’ Alabama All-Star team. The girls’ roster also includes 12 players but none from East Alabama Sports Today’s coverage area.

Broom led defending Class 4A state champion Jacksonville back to the Final Four at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena, where the Golden Eagles will play Hale County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Broom enters the Final Four averaging 20.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

Odam led Piedmont to the Class 3A Northeast Regional final, averaging 25.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 7.1 assists. He finished his high school career with 3,229 points.

Baseball

PIEDMONT 2, JACKSONVILLE 0: Brodie Homesley and Sloan Smith combined to pitch a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, and Piedmont overcame Jacksonville ace Grant Patterson in a showdown of likely top-five seeds for the coming Calhoun County tournament.

The county seeding meeting is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wellborn High School.

Homesley allowed four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in five innings. Smith pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts.

McLane Mohon went 2-for-3, including a double, with the game’s lone RBI. Kale Austin and Cole Wilson also had hits for Piedmont.

Patterson worked six innings for Jacksonville, allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs. He struck out three batters.

Patterson also had a double.

Tito Canales pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout and one walk.

OHATCHEE 11-4, CHILDERSBURG 1-8: Bryce Noah went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead Ohatchee to an 11-1 victory in Game 1.

Noah also pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing four hits, one walk and one unearned run with 12 strikeouts.

Jacob Roberts went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Jesse Baswell went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Ohatchee also got an RBI apiece from Devin Howell, Tyler Green and Noah Griffith. 

Seven errors doomed Ohatchee to an 8-4 loss in the second game. Howell went 3-for-4 with a run, and Will Folsom was 1-for-3 with a double.

RAGLAND 15, CEDAR BLUFF 1: Led by Ezra Hill’s 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and two runs, Ragland pounded out 12 hits.

Brayden Byars, Casey Phillips and Jabari Thomas each had two-hit performances. Each hit a double, as did Ethan Courtney.

Drake Kay and Skyler Barber combined to pitch a three-hitter. Kay struck out seven batters and allowed two hits in four innings, and Barber worked two innings with three strikeouts and one hit.

RAGLAND 16, LOCUST FORK 4: Ragland opened with a seven-run barrage in the first inning and cruised to victory 

Hill, Kay and Jake Donaldson each doubled. Kay went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs.

Barber also drove in two runs. Donaldson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Hill was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Phillips pitched a complete game, with 12 strikeouts in five innings.
