Oxford scores victory in battle of Calhoun County softball powers; Alexandria baseball keeps rolling with victory over Cherokee County

OXFORD — Reagan Sander and Kaelyn Crossley had two hits and scored two runs apiece, and Oxford beat Alexandria 9-2 in softball action at Choccolocco Park on Thursday.

Emma Tims-Beccera, Adajiah Wilson and Chloe Hulsey each had one of Oxford’s three RBIs.

Alexandria got two hits and two RBIs from Clancy Bright and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Oxford pitcher Berkley Mooney settled in after that, finishing with 13 strikeouts and two walks while allowing three hits over 6 2/3 innings. She gave up one earned run.

Oxford took the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the second. The Yellow Jackets added two in the third and one in the fifth.

Alexandria’s Pressley Slaton gave up eight hits and four earned runs over six innings. She also struck out six batters.

Baseball

ALEXANDRIA 9, CHEROKEE COUNTY 3: Ian Cartwright went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Alexandria, and Samuel Henegar drove in two runs.

Leadoff hitter Aaron Johnson went 2-for-4 with three runs.

Tripp Patterson got the win, striking out six batters and giving up two earned runs in five innings. Henegar worked the final two innings, with one unearned run, two walks and four strikeouts.

Cherokee County scored twice in the top of the fourth inning and close within 3-2, but Alexandria answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and four in the fifth.
