Buddy Moore pairings

UPDATED Here are the tee assignments for Saturday’s opening round of the 14th Buddy Moore Charity Tournament at Anniston Municipal

The crowd behind No. 2 at Anniston Municipal gives the Buddy Moore Charity Tournament an air of the stadium hole at TPC Scottsdale and the roars at Augusta. Players are encouraged to visit the hot spot this year to see a memorial to longtime Hill player and friend Tom Sawyer.

The golf is good, the cause is great and the atmosphere is nothing short of PGA Tour quality.

The annual Buddy Moore Charity Tournament tees off Saturday at Anniston Municipal. Whether it’s the first year or the 14th, one thing everyone can count on a loud and proud crowd behind The Hill’s second green.

Think of it as the local version of the stadium hole at TPC Scottsdale.

“It gives the tournament something unique that you don’t see in a lot of places,” tournament director Matt Rogers said. “You have crowds, but you don’t have the roars like we do when our whole group is up there.

“Out there in Phoenix (at the Waste Management), when you stand on the tee you hear all the people, they’ve had enough and you can hear them talking. You hear the roars at Augusta; when you’re on 8 green (here) and you hear them erupting, it’s unique.”

This year, the area will have a special reverence to it. Tournament officials will unveil a monument in memory of Tom Sawyer, a longtime Hill player and friend who passed away in May. He’s been credited with the chorus “Up and Down for a shot of Crown” that is synonymous with the group to encourage players who miss the iconic par-3 green off the tee.

“We encourage people to come to No. 2,” Rogers said. “We’d love for them to bring the roars back the way Tom and them did.”

The field for this year’s tournament has been set for weeks as it fills virtually as soon as entries open. Brennan Clay and Andrew Brooks are the defending champions.

Of course, the goal of the tournament is to raise funds for local families with seriously ill children. Tournament officials expect to raise more than $20,000 this year, pushing its all-time contribution over the $200,000 mark.
