ALBERTVILLE –
Rylee Gattis pitched a perfect game and gave up one hit and struck out 30 over 14 innings Wednesday as Alexandria won its first two games in the Class 5A East Central Regional and will play for a spot in the state tournament in Oxford Thursday.

Piedmont won three games in the consolation bracket to earn the second spot in Class 3A.

Gattis pitched a perfect game and struck out 18 in a 9-0 victory over Guntersville and then threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over Sardis.

“She had a good day,” coach Brian Hess said.

The Lady Cubs will play Moody for the region’s No. 1 spot at 12:15 p.m. Thursday. If they lose that game, they’ll play for the No. 2 spot at 3:15.

Gattis helped herself in the Guntersville game with three hits and two RBIs. Jill Cockrell, Ashley Phillips and Christian Hess had two hits apiece. Hess had two hits and two RBIs in the Sardis game.

In Class 3A, Piedmont beat Ohatchee (5-0), Hokes Bluff (5-3) and Geraldine (8-5) to win the consolation bracket and make it to the state tournament for the second year in a row.

In the clincher, Jaycee Glover blasted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to give the Lady Bulldogs the lead and Emma Grace Todd set Geraldine down in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve it.

The Lady Bulldogs, demonstrating the same come-from-behind grit as the school’s baseball team in its semifinal series, rallied from two earlier deficits (2-0 and 5-4) and tied the game in the top of the seventh.

Savannah Smith went 3-for-4 and Armoni Perry hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

For the day, Glover went 4-for-7 with five RBIs in two games, Perry went 4-for-9 with four RBIs in the three,. Glover went 4-for-7 with five RBIs in two and Jenna Calvert drove in two runs in each of the last two. Todd didn’t allow an earned run in two appearance (11 2/3 innings).

The other 3A state tournament qualifiers are Mobile Christian and Houston Academy from the South, Beulah and Prattville Christian from the Central, Plainview from the East Central, and Oakman and Carbon Hill from the North.
