OXFORD –
The Choccolocco Monsters will play 14 regular-season games in their inaugural Sunbelt Baseball League season at home this year with all but one being Friday or Saturday dates.

The team and league released its 2022 schedule Tuesday. The Monsters play their first games in a controlled May 28 exhibition doubleheader at Columbus followed by a standard nine-inning exhibition game the next day.

Their first game at Choccolocco Park is a June 1 exhibition with Columbus. The first regular-season home game is June 3 against – you guessed it – Columbus.

“Obviously, we’re excited to be able to present the first schedule in the Monsters’ history and we think as fans look at it they’ll see how family-friendly and fan-friendly the schedule is,” Ignite Sports president and Monsters acting GM Scott Brand said. “We’ve concentrated very heavily on weekends to allow people to come out and enjoy our type of baseball and hope they’ll come out and enjoy it.”

While most of the Monsters’ home dates are favorable weekend draws, their road games will be mostly Monday and Wednesday dates with the exception of when they play Columbus. They do end the regular season with a Monday/Wednesday home-and-home with the Chatt-a-Hoots.

“We are fan driven,” Brand said. “We need butts in seats in order to survive and make this last long term, so absolutely it was a goal of ours (to play home on weekends), just like here in Columbus. We have basically the same schedule.”

The Monsters recently went live with ticket sales. Brand estimates more than 100 season-ticket packages have been sold so far and expects the covered grandstand reserved seat to be sold out by the end of the month.

“This is going to be an outstanding experience for our fans and players,” Oxford PARD director Don Hudson said.

The team has inquired about hosting the All-Star Game late in the season, but there is no official word on its host site.
