Friday roundup

Here is a roundup of Friday’s high school baseball and softball action in and around Calhoun County

BASEBALL 
Oxford 6, Gadsden City 4:
The Yellow Jackets opened a 5-0 lead after two innings and 6-0 after five, then held off a Gadsden City rally over the final two innings.

Payton Watts (double) and Hayes Harrison (single) drove in runs in the first inning and Hudson Gilman hit a two-run homer in the second to extend the lead to 4-0. R.J. Brooks had two hits in the game.

Carter Johnson gave up a sixth-inning single and struck out six over the first six innings for the win. He faced one batter over the minimum through the first five innings.

Spring Garden 5, Pleasant Valley 1: Landon Gowens threw a no-hitter and struck out 18. Gowens threw 123 pitches and walked seven. He struck out the side in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers staked him to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Andrew Bates’ two-run double.

Etowah 12, Alexandria 5: Valley Cubs suffer first loss of the season.

SOFTBALL
Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa Invitational
Alexandria 7, Hamilton 0: Pressley Slaton pitched a one-hit shutout and Ashley Phillips went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Slaton gave up a second-inning single and then retired the next 12 batters she faced.

Alexandria 3, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 1: Ava Johnson (2-for-3), Chloe Gattis and Jill Cockrell drove in runs in support of Rylee Gattis’ pitching against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Chloe Gattis went 4-for-5 in the two games.

Sardis Lady Lions Invitational
White Plains 10, Pleasant Valley 4: Layton Arnold threw a complete game with seven strikeouts in the win over Pleasant Valley. Later, the Wildcats lost to Ider 1-0 and Pleasant Valley played Moody.

Weaver Bearcat Bash
Weaver 12, Boaz 4: Kinley Marvasty drove in four runs, Madison Atchley and Taylor Lawrence both had three hits and Sydney Bitzer had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Bearcats.

Weaver 9, Ashville 0: Hannah Hise fashioned a two-hit shutout and the Lady Bearcats broke open a close game with six-run third inning to earn their second victory of the day. Taylor Lawrence (2-for-2) singled home two runs in the first and Alana Cooper and Sydney Bitzer each drove in two runs in the sixth.

Jacksonville 7, Glencoe 4: Dailyn Wood broke a 4-4 tie with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Carli Fritts drove in two runs for the Lady Golden Eagles. Casey Willett and Aubrey Maxwell had two hits apiece for Glencoe. In another game, Glencoe beat Sand Rock 7-2.
