PELL CITY –
Sophomore guard JaMea Gaston hit six 3-pointers, all seemingly at key points in the game, and scored 18 points to help Oxford come from behind to beat Pell City 51-47 and remain undefeated in its area.

Gaston hit three 3s in the first quarter for all of Oxford’s points and three more in the third quarter when the Lady Jackets ultimately overcame their seven-point first-quarter deficit.

The Lady Jackets (13-3), installed as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Calhoun County Tournament for the first time since 2002 Wednesday, hit eight 3s in the game.

“JaMea Gaston was huge tonight,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “She hit six 3s and they always seemed to be when we needed it. … She as just feeling it, I guess.”

Justice Woods and Xai Whitfield, who each hit Oxford’s other 3-pointers, also finished in double figures with 11 and 13 points, respectively.

CLEBURNE COUNTY 78, WHITE PLAINS 51: Brooklyn McDaniel scored 22 of her 33 points in the fourth quarter, including 9-of-10 from the free throw line, and the Lady Tigers went 15-of-20 from the line in their 28-4 fourth quarter that allowed them to pull away.

The Lady Tigers were up 50-46 going into the fourth quarter then just took control. On top of all they did offensively, they didn’t allow White Plains a field goal in the quarter.

“My girls were relentless in the fourth quarter; they were not going to lose this important area game,” Cleburne County coach Todd Gable said. “I told them at half this second half will tell how much being a champ means to you. How hard will you fight to win the game.”

In addition to McDaniel’s 33 points, Hailey Price (21) and Faith Brown (19) also scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers. They were a combined 21-for-37 from the floor and 22-for-31 from the foul line.

McDaniel also grabbed 17 rebounds. Price hit five 3-pointers and Brown added eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.

“We have to win out to tie Handley for the area,” Gable said. “It’s going to be a fight to the end. Our girls took a big step forward tonight beating a good team at their place.”

OHATCHEE 67, PLEASANT VALLEY 43: The game belonged to Ohatchee, but the moment was all Rylee Haynes.

The Pleasant Valley senior reached the 1,000-point plateau when she scored the first basket of the game as part of a three-point play that staked the Lady Raiders to an early lead. She needed only two points to reach the milestone and took care of that piece of business straight away.

Haynes went on to score 14 points and now has 1,012 for her career. They stopped the game briefly to recognize the feat, but when play resumed it was all Ohatchee. The Lady Indians hit three straight 3s and never trailed again.

Ohatchee’s Jorda Crook led all scorers with 28 points. She had 18 points in the second half, 12 in the fourth quarter. Millie Rainwater hit four 3s and had 12 points, as did Tabi Davidson and Gracie George.
