Sam Adams picked up the first victory as Oxford’s head football coach today after Pleasant Grove officials informed the Yellow Jackets they would have to forfeit last week’s game due to an ineligible player.

Pleasant Grove won the game, its season opener, on the field 61-24.

Oxford athletics director Larry Davidson said he wasn’t aware of any issue until he got the call today.

The player has not been identified but sources have said it was Tadarius (T.D.) Parker, a transfer from Munford. Parker caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Alex Young in the Spartans’ 35-point second quarter against the Jackets.

“I just got a call from the Pleasant Grove head coach (Darrell LeBeaux) and he informed me they had to forfeit the game due to an ineligible player,” Davidson said. “We didn’t know anything about it. It is what it is.”

A social media post attributed to Darren Parker, the player’s father, was critical of the situation.

“I just don’t get how a coach will try to hurt a kid. Cause the kid see better opportunities somewhere else. But it’s OK when the coach sees a better opportunity for himself and his family. I say this when you TRY to close that door. God will open that door, so stay tuned for the BIG NEWS!!”

Pleasant Grove was ranked No. 2 in this week’s statewide Class 5A rankings. The Spartans beat Cordova Thursday night, 46-18.

Oxford (1-1) returns to the field Friday at Scottsboro.
