3 vying for titles

Two Oxford wrestlers, one from Alexandria could add to county’s title take today as 5A-6A state tournament concludes

HUNTSVILLE – Three wrestlers from Calhoun County will have a chance to win state titles in consecutive matches Saturday when the 66th AHSAA Class 5A-6A State Wrestling Championships conclude at the Von Braun Center here.
Oxford’s Chase Hicks (145) and Jakob Chisolm (160) and Alexandria’s Jaden New (152) will all be involved in title matches.
Hicks (38-2) faces Spanish Fort’s Gabe Warren (29-1), New (16-0) faces Buckhorn’s Gabe Sweat (34-2) and Chisolm (25-0) faces Pelham’s Rafael Hipolito (24-0). Hicks and New won titles last year, while Chisolm lost in the finals.
In the past, Class 5A had been lumped in with the Class 1A-4A wrestlers, but this year the state combined it with 6A, leaving the 1A-4As to compete among themselves. Calhoun County produced eight state champions in the smaller school division last weekend.
Gardendale, the 2020 Class 6A state champion and winners of the 2020 and 2021 Duals state tourney titles, forged to the top of a team race with 162.5 points at the conclusion of the day.
The Rockets trailed Arab by a half-point heading into the championship bracket semifinals Friday night, 103.5 to 103. The Knights, last year’s 1A-5A state champs, closed strong as well and takes 153.5 points into Saturday’s final day.
Wetumpka is third with 141 points, followed by McAdory at 117 and Homewood with 116. Fort Payne is sixth with 109.5 points and Pelham is seventh with 105.
Action resumes Saturday with consolation semifinals at 10 a.m., followed by the consolation finals and the championship bracket finals.
