County has 2 No. 1s

Oxford, Piedmont pull down top spots in this week’s poll

By East Alabama Sports Today

Oxford goes into its open date No. 1 in Class 6A, giving Calhoun County two No. 1s in this week’s high school football poll.

The Yellow Jackets, the defending Class 6A state champions, were a unanimous No. 1, pulling down all 23 possible first-place votes in the ASWA poll. Piedmont is No. 1 in Class 3A, having received 22 of 23 first-place votes.

The Jackets have won five in a row after dropping their opener to defending 7A state champion Thompson and passed Mountain Brook as the new No. 1 after the Spartans were shut out by Thompson.

This is the 13th time they have been No. 1 in the ASWA poll since 1962. They were last No. 1 in the poll during the season after Week 1 of the 1994 season (Sept. 9), the last of nine consecutive weeks in the top spot. They were this year’s preseason No. 1 after winning the state title last season.

“I did not even know we were No. 1,” Oxford coach Keith Etheredge said. “We are just trying to take each game one at a time. I would love to be No. 1 after Dec. 6 and Game 15. Any other time it just puts a Big Target on our back.

“It is great that we are being noticed and our kids’ hard work is paying off. Our goal is getting to play in Tuscaloosa in December, but we only get that opportunity if we take it one game at a time.”

The Jackets have been on a roll. They have scored 42 points or more in each of their last four games. They have been led by quarterback Trey Higgins, who has completed 68 percent of his passes this season for 1,327 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 476 yards and seven scores.

The other Calhoun County teams in this week’s poll are Wellborn (3A No. 3), Ohatchee (3A No. 6), Jacksonville (4A No. 7) and Alexandria (5A No. 6). Piedmont and Ohatchee play this week at the Field of Champions.

Actually, the area has three No. 1s this week, as undefeated Randolph County is the top rated team in Class 2A.
