ANNISTON – Brandon Foster’s bucket with 10 seconds left in overtime gave Westbrook Christian the lead after it rallied from 12 down in the fourth quarter to force extra time and the Warriors stunned Sacred Heart 50-48 to end the Cardinals’ area winning streak that dates back to 2013.

Sacred Heart had won 62 games in a row against Class 1A or 2A area opponents since losing to Ragland three times in 2012-13. The Cardinals won four straight state championships and played in six straight Final Fours since that last area loss.

The result drops the two teams into a tie for first place in Class 2A Area X at 5-1 and a coin flip will be held Tuesday at Sacred Heart to determine the top seed and host for the upcoming area tournament.

Former Alexandria standout Joe Tucker led the Warriors (13-9) with 19 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer with second left in regulation. Andrew Lockridge had six points, seven assists and three steals. Foster had four points.

The Warriors trailed 40-28 after three quarters, but Tucker led the comeback with eight points in the fourth quarter. Lockridge had five in the quarter.

The Cardinals had at least two chances to get the tying points after Foster’s go-ahead basket, but after missing at the free throw line with four-tenths of a second remaining, they were unable to a get shot off.

Sacred Heart’s Aaron Moore led all scorers with 24 points. He had Sacred Heart’s only points in the fourth quarter and overtime (eight total). Taishun Hall added 12 for the Cardinals.

“I didn’t want to make this game too big for our guys,” Westbrook coach Matt Cody said. “Because at the end of the day you’re playing for a coin flip to see who hosts the area tournament – that’s huge, don’t get me wrong – but this is just another basketball game for us right now. We’ve got a lot of games left. Don’t make this game too big.

“Obviously, yes, the coin flip now would be tremendously huge for us to win and host the area tournament. I don’t think Westbrook has hosted the area tournament in probably four or five years … Hats off to Sacred Heart, those guys play really, really hard. I’m looking forward to maybe playing them again, see what happens in the area tournament and go from there.”
