HEFLIN – It may have seemed like a formality, but Anniston coach Eddie Bullock takes nothing for granted.

Bullock’s Anniston girls basketball team mathematically locked up the outright No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Area 9 tournament with a one-sided 66-23 win over Cleburne County Monday.

“I like to play at home, everybody likes to play at home,” Bullock said of the hosting rights that come with the top area seed. “You’re more comfortable playing at home than you are on the road. That home court crowd gives you that advantage for going to the state.”

The Lady Bulldogs had clinched a share of the title and the No. 1 seed when they routed Talladega last week, but they had yet to play Cleburne County and losses in those two games, although unlikely, would have taken the race to a tiebreaker. Now, they’ll have it outright.

The game followed a familiar formula. The Lady Bulldogs used a smothering defense to fuel their offense, got some strong outside shooting and dominated inside. Even without sharp-shooter Allasha Dudley, out with an ankle injury, Anniston was more than the Lady Tigers could handle.

Kiana Montgomery scored 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs opened a 25-7 lead and Asia Barclay scored 10 of her game-high 20 in the second quarter as they extended the lead to 43-14 by halftime.

“They did what they’re supposed to do, but not as well as I wanted them to do,” Bullock said. “Asia and Kiana have to be able to play to their level; that’s what I’m trying to get them to do.”

The Lady Bulldogs might have been missing Dudley, but they did have Anna Garrett back for the second straight game after the guard had missed 10 games with an illness. Garrett controlled the opening tip, scored five points and assisted on both of Airriana Colley 3-pointers in the first quarter.

“It’s actually been kind of hard; I’m a little, I don’t want to say, out of shape, I’ve just got to get my mojo back,” Garrett said. “It seemed a little normal, but it was like I was getting a little tired faster than normal because I hadn’t played in like 10 games.”
