GLENCOE – At this point perhaps it’s best for the Lincoln basketball team to just put a 12-point deficit on the scoreboard, 12 minutes on the clock and go from there.

The Golden Bears staged their third straight comeback from double digits Saturday night, this time rallying from 15 down in the first quarter and seven to start the fourth to beat Fort Payne 67-59 and win the Glencoe Holiday Shootout.

In their three tournament wins, they came from 24 down in the third quarter against Alexandria and 15 points with five minutes to play against Piedmont. This time the deficit was not as large as late and when it was the Bears had a lot more time to work it off; still, they fell behind by an uncomfortable margin.

“It’s bothersome,” Lincoln coach Doug Ward said. “Our preparation is not being put into action. We get a scouting report, we tell them how we want to do things, between the preparation and get to the game there’s a disconnect.

“Halftime was a come-to-Jesus meeting and then we had a come-to-Jesus timeout. Nothing against the teams we played, to beat an Anniston, to beat a Talladega, to get to where they say they want to go we’ve got to be able to execute these things better. It’s bothersome.”

A 15-0 Fort Payne run in the first quarter put the Bears in a 22-7 hole. They did get back within one with 3:17 left in the third quarter, but the Wildcats rebuilt the lead to 45-38 going into the fourth quarter.

Javion Surles and Brian Garrett brought the Bears back. They finally got the game tied at 53 on a 3-pointer by Surles with 4:25 to play and another on their next trip down the floor gave them their first lead with 3:54 to play.

Fort Payne went back on top 59-58 on a pair of Jake Hendricks free throws with 1:56 to play, then the Bears scored the last nine points of the game. The big exchange came with 36.9 seconds left when Garrett was fouled driving to the basket, Fort Payne coach Michael Banks was hit with a technical foul for protesting too loudly and Garrett hit three of the free throws.

Surles was fouled on the ensuing possession. He hit the first free throw making it a four-point possession but had to leave the game with blood on his uniform. Cam Reynolds replaced him and missed the second free thow, but the Bears still had a 64-59 lead.

“It was kind of scary, but we know we can focus, buckle down and play with anybody we play against,” Garrett said. “We have a lot of playmakers on the team, but we focused on playing as a team, played ball and got the victory.”

Surles scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half, 15 in the fourth quarter. Garrett scored 19 of his 23 in the second half. They combined for 25 points in the fourth quarter.

“They’re good,” Ward said. “I think the confrontation me and (Garrett) had was the first time he’s actually shown some life. He’s kind of not been strong in these situations and he was real strong tonight. He took over there early. He had that assassin’s look in his eye tonight.”
