County Tournament

Pairings are set for this weekend’s 83rd Calhoun County Tournament at traditional home Anniston Municipal and it shapes up as one of the deepest fields in years with top players scattered throughout both waves of play.
Thirteen of the top 15 players – and 18 of the top 20 – in the current adjusted Calhoun County Tour standings are in the field.
If you look at the pairings closely, organizers had a little U.S. Open in them, putting together two afternoon groups with definite nods to nostalgia.
The 1A group features former County champions who’ve won their titles at Anniston Municipal – Chip Howell, Gary Wigington, Ott Chandler and Adrian Geeting. The 1B group is an homage to the Hill – Danny Whittaker, Andrew Tyson, Byron Preston and Mark Gaines.
Player of the Year and all 16 places in the Calhoun County Match Play Championship will be determined in the tournament. Ty Cole, a four-time Tour winner this season, holds a 150-point lead on Wigington in the POY race, but still needs to finish fourth or better (with a Wigington win) to lock up the crown. Layton Bussey currently holds the 16thspot, but the next seven players – six of whom are in the field – are within 90 points of him.
All players in the field will receive a commemorative towel listing all the past champions of the tournament.
Saturday and Sunday a variety of biscuits and doughnuts will be available to the 8 a.m. wave on a first-come, first-served basis. Lunch both days will be served starting at around 11:30 a.m. (Betty’s BBQ on Saturday, Zaxby’s Sunday).
The Hill Men’s Golf Association will be offering a 50-50. There will be a Skins Game on Saturday and possibly on Sunday.
