Garrett goes out fast

Burgess shoots 64 in first County Tour round since regaining amateur status in June, leads ACC Invitational; Clay makes an ace

Garrett Burgess celebrated a “pretty good” return to the Calhoun County Golf Tour Friday with a Waffle House order that was smothered and chunked.

He did neither on the golf course earlier in the day.

Burgess shot a 6-under-par 64 to lead championship flight qualifying in the Wilfred Galbraith ACC Invitational. It was his first County Tour round since regaining his amateur status last June.

He had seven birdies and a three-putt bogey on 18. He leads County Tour points leader Gary Wigington, Jeremy McGatha and Tyler Putnam by four shots.

“I hit it pretty good,” he said. “I never put myself in a bad position.”

Brennan Clay scored a hole-in-one on No. 4. It was his fourth ace ever and first in tournament competition. He aced the 177-yard par-3 with an 8-iron. The shot got his round back to even par. He shot 74.

“My year has kind of been struggling,” Clay said. “It’s nice to have something positive happen.”

It was the first ace on the County Tour since Eric Lett jarred one on No. 3 in the second round of last year’s Oxford City Championship at Cider Ridge. In ACC Invitational play, Janson Wilborn made one in the second round of the 2015 tournament (No. 16), one of two he had that year.

Burgess won this tournament in 2008 and 2009 and finished second in 2011. He turned pro shortly thereafter and just got his amateur status back last summer. He played in the ACC club championship in April and that’s been about the only thing he’s played in the last two or three years.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “I hadn’t played in a month until (Thursday) and they talked me into playing today.

“It was fun getting back out there and playing with everybody. Everything is fun when you’re playing good.”
