OXFORD –
When Alexandria and Oxford get together for any sort of competition it is a battle and Monday night was no exception.

The Lady Cubs pulled away in the final three minutes to score their second win of the season over the Lady Jackets, 42-37 at the Oxford Sports Arena.

Maggie Phillips and Kameron Simpson combined to score seven straight points as Alexandria (6-14) pulled away from a 35-35 tie.

Oddly enough Alexandria beat the Lady Jackets 42-35 on Dec. 20. A running jumper by senior Jamya Gibson that just beat the clock kept the score from being the same.

Five different Alexandria players combined to nail six 3-pointer, while Oxford only had one in the game.

The Lady Jackets (5-19) never led in the contest, but it was tied three times in the fourth quarter.

Both quarters in the first half went much the same way as the Lady Cubs opened up a six-point lead and the Lady Jackets fought back to cut the lead down. Both teams were full-court pressing, making it hard for either team to get a good look at the basket.

“I thought our defense was very good,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “We got on top early and it was important for us to stay on top. Simpson hit some big shots for us down the stretch … and Ashley Phillips made good decisions with the ball.”

Simpson led Alexandria with 12 points. Maggie Phillips had nine, Kaitlin Harvey had six and six rebounds, and Ashley Phillips had seven and five rebounds. – Brant Locklier

WEAVER – Piedmont took advantage of a shorthanded Weaver team to open a 12-0 lead and keep the Lady Bearcats from going undefeated in their area.

Weaver was missing leading scorer Caleigh Cortez (flu) and 3-point threat Abby Gaines (ankle), but expect to have both back in time for the area tournament next week.

With them, the Bearcats are pretty good. Without them Monday, the offense struggled. Weaver didn’t get on the board until Amira Carter answered coach Gary Atchley prayer with a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left in the first quarter. Carter was Weaver’s leading scorer with nine points.

Meanwhile, Sydnee Prater led Piedmont with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Lele Ridley had 18 points and eight blocked shots, Z’Hayla Walker had nine rebounds, and Kayley Kirk had 11 points, eight rebounds and eight steals.

“All we talked about is trying to get through and get to next week,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “I think we did pretty well (working on things), but I want to do a little bit more.”
