Piedmont passes Pennington, reaches third round for fourth year in a row, 10th time under Smith

BLOUNTSVILLE – Mason Mohon threw two first-quarter touchdown passes, Elijah Johnson had two big touchdown runs in the final two minutes of the third quarter and Piedmont reached the third round of the Class 3A playoffs for the fourth year in a row with a 41-16 pasting of J.B. Pennington.
It was the 10th time in the 13 years under coach Steve Smith the Bulldogs have gotten to at least the third round of the playoffs.
The Bulldogs (10-2) will host undefeated Westminster Christian (11-0) at the Field of Champions Friday at 7 p.m. for a place in the 3A North finals against either Saks or Randolph County.
Mohon threw two touchdown passes in the final three and a half minutes of the first quarter to stake the Bulldogs for a 14-0 lead. He threw a 42-yard pass to T.J. Fairs to open the scoring then after Sean Smith blocked and recovered a punt he threw a 27-yarder to Delo Foster.
Mohon was 6-of-10 passing in the game for 110 yards.
The Tigers (6-6) got on the board with a safety, then with 51 seconds left in the half Jack Hayes broke off a 3-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 20-2 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs added three touchdowns in the final six minutes of the third quarter. Kaedon Jenkins had a 51-yard touchdown run with 5:44 left and Johnson scored on runs of 23 and 57 in the final 1:37 of the quarter.
The Tigers scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns against the Piedmont reserves.
Johnson finished with 123 yards on eight carries and Jenkins had 82 yards on eight carries. The Piedmont defense held the Tigers to negative yardage going into their last three possessions of the game.
