PIEDMONT – Just one week after Steve Smith coached in his 300th career football games, another Piedmont football milestone was achieved Friday night when the fifth-ranked Bulldogs beat Clements in their Class 3A playoff opener.

Six different Piedmont players scored a touchdown as the Bulldogs blanked the Colts 41-0, securing the 300th home victory in Piedmont’s history.

“Last year, I believe our team won the 500th game in the history of the school,” Smith said. “You think back on the last 100 years of football, and all the great players that have walked across the field and put on a Piedmont uniform, every single one of them that had a part of any win had a part in this accomplishment. It’s a special accomplishment for everybody.”

Mason Mohon, Matthew Thornton, T.J. Fairs, Elijah Johnson, Kaedon Jenkins and Matthew Pfledderer all scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who travel to J.B. Pennington next week.

Mohon’s touchdown was set up by a big punt return by T.J. Fairs. Thornton’s score came on a fumble recovery caused by Bryson Ingram. Fair’s TD was set up by a 39-yard Mohon pass to Delo Foster.

The shutout was Piedmont’s third in its last five games. It was the Bulldogs’ fourth in the playoffs under Smith.

The Bulldogs are 19-4 all-time in the first round of the playoffs and have won their last 12 first-round games in a row. They are 12-6 all-time in Round 2. – Kurt Duryea

WEDOWEE – Five players combined for eight touchdowns as the top-ranked Tigers cruised in their playoff opener.

The stable of backs for the Tigers found rhythm early and often as they combined for 436 yards on the ground. Atario Hester, Dante Jordan and Jonathon Prothro scored two touchdowns each, while Terrance Sims and Alex Sheppard each had one.

“We like to share the wealth with everybody,” Tigers coach Pat Prestridge said. “Offensively we hadn’t done a great job the last couple weeks doing what we do best and I think tonight maybe we stepped up a little bit.”

The Tigers’ defense did its part, too, holding Lauderdale County to 152 yards of total offense while recording four takeaways – fumble recoveries by Prothro, Hester and Christian Lipham and an interception by Damarcus Davis.
