Donoho sweeps

Lady Falcons make big play in third set to complete sweep of Wellborn, on track to host Donoho Classic this weekend

By East Alabama Sports Today

Lily Grace Draper and Maggie Miller were standouts all over the court Monday and led Donoho to a three-set volleyball sweep over Wellborn.

The Lady Falcons won 25-21, 25-11, 29-27. They were down 20-24 in the third set when they saved a ball that hit the net near the ground and gave it just enough momentum to get it across to the other side.

“It was one of those plays that only seems to happen when fate is on your side to stay alive in the third set,” Donoho coach Jamie Clendenin said. “The fight is there.

“When we finally jell, we could be a team to look out for. Once the entire team buys in we will be a solid team.”

Draper had eight kills and 11 digs, while Miller recorded 32 assists.

Mary Marshall and Mercy Mangum were strong on the front row. Mangum had seven kills, while Marshall had seven kills and three blocks.

Mya Keel and Jenna Stremmel were strong in the back. Keel had two kills, two aces and six digs. Stremmel had 10 digs and three aces.

Kaitlyn Kim had five digs and five aces. Kate Porteous had one kill, one ace and four assists.

The Lady Falcons (12-7) have two more dates this week before hosting the Donoho Classic this weekend.

They go to Oxford Tuesday to face the Lady Jackets and Moody, and travel to Saks Thursday to play the Lady Wildcats and Etowah.

Their tournament Saturday has three strong pools – Pool A: Westminster, Sacred Heart, Spring Garden, Ohatchee and Donoho JV; Pool B: Meek, Donoho, Holy Spirit, Wellborn, Piedmont; Pool C: Athens Bible, Faith Christian, Ider, White Plains, Talladega.

The top teams from each pool advance to the Gold Bracket.
