Spivey transfers

White Plains’ All-State slugger transfers to Oxford, should be in lineup for play date Monday night; includes county’s all-state selections

The paperwork has been completed just in time for Jake Spivey to be in the lineup Monday night when Oxford’s baseball team opens its summer playing schedule at Choccolocco Park.

The rising senior, just named Class 4A All-State first team DH Saturday night, becomes Calhoun County’s highest profile baseball transfer of the summer, coming over from White Plains, where he has played since eighth grade.

He is expected to hit in the middle of the Yellow Jackets’ lineup and play the corner infield positions and catch, where coach Wes Brooks projects him to be a top prospect.

“He’s a big strong kid in the weight room and we’re excited to add him to the middle of our order,” Brooks said. “He’s one of the hardest working kids I’ve seen. He will give us another big stick to knock in a lot of runs. He can really swing it.”

Spivey also is expected to play center on the Yellow Jackets’ football team and has been a regular workout partner of top offensive line prospect Clay Webb.

Spivey was one of 11 Calhoun County players named to the all-state baseball team. Here is the list:
