Donoho leads Oxford golf

County champion Falcons return to site of weekend title with stronger play, lead by 26; Glencoe’s Cole medalist in tri-match

By East Alabama Sports Today

OXFORD — The Donoho golf team left Cider Ridge on Saturday with the Calhoun County Championship in hand, but knowing it could – and would have to – play better the rest of the year to achieve the goals it set for itself.

The Falcons did play better Monday on the same venue and opened a 26-shot lead over the team it beat for the county title in the opening round of the Oxford Invitational.

Donoho put four scores in the 70s and had four of the top eight rounds of the day to shoot 302 and open a sizeable overnight lead over White Plains. The 302 was better by eight of either round the Falcons shot in the county tournament and 17 better than its final round.

“They came ready to play today, I think,” Donoho coach Garrett Burgess said. “I think the cold conditions helped a little bit, but they definitely were a different team today.”

Donoho’s Jacob LeCroy, the county runnerup, shot the best round of the day – a 1-over-par 73 – and leads longtime Alabama commitment Tyler Lipscomb of Bremen (Ga.) by a shot. Donoho’s Jack Svensen is tied for third at 75 with Fort Payne’s Harrison Davis; Svensen bettered his best county tournament round by four shots.

The Falcons also counted 77s from county champion Harrison Hughston and Holden Abernathy.

White Plains I is second at 328. The Wildcats, whose lineup looked a bit different than their county tournament alignment, counted an 81 from Andrew Miller, 82s from Gage Miller and Kenny Okins, and an 83 from Nate Griffin.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Glencoe’s Cole wins another

SILVER LAKES – Glencoe’s Lauren Cole shot 46 and was low medalist in a tri-match on Silver Lakes’ Backbreaker 9 among the Lady Jackets, Weaver and Ohatchee.

Cole’s teammate Camryn Blackwell was second (58) and Weaver’s Cara Burgess third (61).

Weaver also got 62s from Autumn Ray and Carmelia Reese and 70 from Demari Grant. Ohatchee’s Sara Atkinson shot 70.
