LeCroy, Donoho tune up for Calhoun County Tournament by winning Bob Jones Invitational

By East Alabama Sports Today

ATHENS – Jacob LeCroy is feeling good over his putts and that’s a good sign for the Donoho golf team.

The Falcons tuned up for this weekend’s Calhoun County Boys Tournament at Cider Ridge by shooting a 5-over-par 293 to win the Bob Jones Invitational at Canebrake Club. LeCroy made six birdies and shot 5-under 67 to win low medalist.

LeCroy bogeyed his first hole of the round, then ripped off six birdies. He won by two shots over Landon Miles of James Clemens. Westbrook Christian’s Will Wethington and Fort Payne’s Dawson Garrett both shot 71.

“This was a solid round for me,” LeCroy said. “I’ve been struggling putting a little bit and today I just felt better over putts. I didn’t feel weird, I was just over the ball feeling more confident. I missed the three easiest holes on the course, but I made it up everywhere else.

“I was playing with a good group of players and it was tight through about 14 holes; we were going back and forth. It feels good knowing that I grinded all 18 holes today. I’ve had a few good rounds this year and I am finally remembering how to grind for all 18 instead of 14 or so holes.”

In addition to LeCroy, the Falcons also counted a 73 from Harrison Hughston, 76 from Buddy Ray and 77 from Holden Abernathy. Jack Svensen shot 80. Fort Payne finished second as a team at 302, one shot ahead of Northridge.

“Holden Abernathy had a solid round and so did Buddy Ray,” LeCroy said. “They came through today and if we want to win the county tournament and any other tournaments we play in this year, they are the key.

“I’m feeling confident over my golf shots and if I can get the putting going this weekend I feel I will have some more red numbers on the scoreboard.”

Donoho’s expected biggest challengers at the County Tournament, White Plains, is coming off an 11th-place finish (319) in a tournament at Limestone Springs on Tuesday. The Wildcats were led by Andrew Miller’s 75 and recently promoted Josh Davis’ 76.
