By East Alabama Sports Today

HUNTSVILLE – Oxford won its second straight Class 6A state wrestling title and Calhoun County scored seven individual state champions Saturday during the final day of the AHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Von Braun Center.

The Yellow Jackets scored 203 points. Jakob Chisolm (126), Matt King (152) and heavyweight Clay Webb all won state titles. Webb won the Most Pins Award in 6A.

The Yellow Jackets have won all four legs of the County Slam each of the last two years — County Championship, State Duals, South Super Sectionals, State Championship.

Alexandria got championships from all three of its wrestlers in the 1A-5A finals.

Christian Knop (182) completed his third straight undefeated season with his third straight state title with his 164th straight victory. This one came with something new — the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.

“It’s definitely something I’ve strived for ever since I started,” Knop said. “I dreamed about getting Most Valuable at the State Tournament. It was on the bucket list and now I can say I can finally cross it off.”

Jaden New (113) and Aaron Whittaker (152) also won state titles for the Valley Cubs. New overcame a restless night that had him watching tape of previous matches with his opponent, and Whittaker’s title match was voted Best Match of 1A-5A

Weaver’s Caleb Allison won the state title at 220.
