Alexandria win region title; Oxford finish fifth in Alabama, Webb wins 285, Shumaker second in 220

Alexandria won the Class 1A-5A Region 4 wrestling championship Saturday as it swept through five opponents.

The Valley Cubs defeated Weaver 52-30, Wellborn 56-24, Piedmont 60-12 and Piedmont and Saks.

Kaleb Matthews, Christian Knop and Aaron Whittaker all scored three pins for the Valley Cubs. Matthews’ pins totaled a tournament-best 2 minutes, 18 seconds.

Oxford fifth in Southeastern Pools

ALABASTER – Oxford junior Clay Webb won the 285 title, freshman Kobe Shumaker finished second at 220 and the Yellow Jackets finished fifth in the Southeastern Pools Invitational at Thompson High School.

Webb, 14-0, pinned Thompson senior Seth Whitlock in 3:28 in the 285 final. Shumaker, 33-20, was pinned by Oak Mountain’s Jordan Davis in 5:13 in the 220 final.

The Jackets had three other wrestlers place in the top four of their respective weight classes – 113 Chase Hicks (third), 126 Jacob Chisolm (fourth) and 160 Matt King (third).
