Tournament MVP Emil Smith scored seven of his 13 points in a big second quarter, but Etowah needed all its resources to hold off a late Alexandria charge and win 61-59 Saturday for the Champions Christmas Classic title.

The Blue Devils hit four of their six 3-pointers in a 29-point second quarter that helped them erase an early deficit and take a 40-34 halftime lead in the battle of Class 5A Area 13 rivals. They stretched it in the third quarter, but the Valley Cubs rallied to make it tight down the stretch.

The loss spoiled dominating games by Alexandria’s twin towers of Landan Williams and Dalton Dodd. Williams led all scorers with 25 points and Dodd scored 23. Williams and Dodd scored all the Valley Cubs’ points in the fourth quarter and all but one in the second half.

Taylor Berry led Etowah with 17 points.

“We had our chances, but they are pretty good,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said.
