WEAVER – When the Weaver girls basketball team lost Mariah Thompson to a knee injury two weeks ago, the Lady Bearcats went searching for someone to replace her scoring.

Emily Reed and Abby Gaines filled that bill Tuesday night.

With the additional challenge of top scorers Caleigh Cortez and Rayne Beck both in foul trouble and eventually fouling out, Reed came through with 18 points and Gaines added nine as the Lady Bearcats edged Wellborn 62-53 in their area opener.

It was their first win without Thompson, who suffered her injury earlier in the Cedar Bluff game Dec. 1 and is expected to get the evaluation on her MRI Wednesday.

“It was our first win without Mariah and it was a big one,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “We are starting to figure things out and when we do we will be a hard team to beat. We have got to figure out how to play with high intensity and be the most physical team on the floor every night.”

When all the pieces are working together, the Lady Bearcats (4-5) were sharp. Reed, who earlier this year was implored to shoot more, scored nine points in the first quarter and helped stake Weaver to an 11-point lead. It was an 18-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bearcats also were successful in keeping Wellborn scoring machine Vanessa Carter off the scoreboard in the first quarter. Carter finished with a game-high 23 points, but she scored 16 in the fourth quarter as the Lady Panthers were frantically trying to catch up.— Al Muskewitz

Plainview 68, Oxford 56: The Lady Bears (8-2) used hard-nosed pressure defense to pull away in the last three minutes.

Plainview went on a 10-1 run in the last 3 minutes to break open a 58-55 lead and dump the Lady Jackets (6-5) for the second time this season. The lead changed hands seven times in the game.

Turnovers hurt the Jackets big-time as they turned it over 20 times, while the Bears only mishandled it seven times.

Plainview drilled seven first-half 3-pointers, four by Olivia Graham, who had 18 of her 27 in the half. Oxford would not back down and matched the Bears point-for-point with balanced scoring. Makayla Kidd had 11 first-half points and Tremeria Britt added seven more.

Kidd ended up with 13 points and four rebounds, while Tremeria Britt tallied 14 points. Justyce Smith had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She scored nine in the second half. — Brant Locklier

Anniston 62, Handley 53: Toniah Foster and Allasha Dudley both enjoyed double-doubles as the Lady Dawgs (6-1) scored an area victory.

Foster scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds, while Dudley had 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Montiega Clemons had 18 points and Tekyia Jackson grabbed 13 rebounds.
