Clay County takes the lead with six seconds left, then holds off Talladega; Surles goes for 36 to lead Lincoln

By East Alabama Sports Today

TALLADEGA – Ben Street hit the front end of a two-shot foul with 5.8 seconds left to give Clay Central a two-point lead and then his team had to hold its breath as Talladega went to the line with four-tenths of a second left in hopes of forcing overtime.

Chaztin Tanner hit his first free throw, but missed the second after a timeout and the Volunteers escaped with a 69-67 victory to even their record (2-2).

Quan McKinney led three Clay County scorers in double figures with 18 points. Jacquez Bullock had 16 and Shemeri Simmons had 14.

The Volunteers held a 35-33 lead at halftime and extended it to 11 going into the fourth quarter behind eight points from McKinney and a couple 3-pointers.

Ashton Duncan helped bring the Tigers back with 12 of his game-high 20 in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln 67, Pell City 49: Everything Lincoln does on the basketball floor goes through Javion Surles and it sure did on this night.

Surles went for 36 points as the Golden Bears beat Pell City for the second time this season.

“He had a really good night,” Lincoln coach Jeff Lumpkin said. “He was very active and got to the rim well. Everything pretty much ran through him. He stepped up and had a big night for us.”

Surles got better every quarter. He scored seven in the first as the Golden Bears (5-4) opened a 13-10 lead. He had nine in the second quarter and 13 in the third.

In two other Talladega County games, Winterboro defeated Munford 67-54 and Talladega County Central dumped ASD 57-31.
