Top-ranked Piedmont uses four big-play touchdowns to get past Geraldine in opening round of 3A playoffs

By East Alabama Sports Today

PIEDMONT – Big plays were the order of the day as Piedmont formally opened the defense of its back-to-back state championships with a 26-6 victory over Geraldine Friday night in a Class 3A opening-round playoff game at the Field of Champions.

All four of the top-ranked Bulldogs’ touchdowns came from more than 20 yards and three of them were 50 yards or longer.

Piedmont, 10-1 and riding a 10-game winning streak, now hosts J.B. Pennington (9-2) in a second-round game Friday. The Bulldogs have won 11 straight playoff games and have won their last eight home playoff games.

Quarterback Cardavion Myers was responsible for three of the long scoring plays. He opened the scoring with a 58-yard pass to Darien Bossie midway through the first quarter. He had a 50-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 21-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Johnson in the fourth quarter.

Lee Stanley scored the Bulldogs’ other touchdown on an 88-yard run early in the second quarter.

Both Stanley and Myers went over the 1,500-yard rushing mark for the season in the game. Stanley had 143 yards on 11 carries and now has 1,516 yards for the season (and 16 touchdowns). Myers rushed for 65 yards and has 1,534 yards (and 21 touchdowns).

Myers also has thrown for 1,040 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

Despite winning another playoff game, there are some things the Bulldogs will have to clean up moving forward. They failed to convert three of their four extra-point attempts and they had 11 penalties for 90 yards.
