Saks still looking in

Wildcats remain on the outside of the statewide poll despite 6-0 record; if it bothers them, they’re not letting on

What’s it going to take for Saks to break into the statewide football poll?
The Wildcats took down another Class 4A opponent in a big way Friday night, but they still haven’t seemed to impress the voters in the statewide football poll.
The Wildcats (6-0) remained undefeated, but were unranked when the poll came out Tuesday night. They are one of only two undefeated teams not in their respective top 10s.
This is the same poll that installed Handley as the preseason No. 1 just because it was the defending state champion; the Tigers, who lost a lot of firepower off that team, are now 0-6.
MaxPreps, meanwhile, has Saks No. 3 in 4A. If the Wildcats are bothered by their season-long snub by the writers, they don’t seem be letting on.
“I don’t really care about that,” Saks coach Jonathan Miller said. “I don’t look at the poll when it comes out; usually a kid tells me about it. The kids would like to be ranked; I don’t really care. I think we play a little bit better when people overlook us and they’re not patting us on the back.”
Said quarterback LaDerrick Bell: “It doesn’t bother me at all. I really like it because a lot of people doubt us and we come up and prove them wrong. We’ve got something to prove.”
The Wildcats look to add another notch Friday night against Anniston.
As for those Calhoun County teams that are ranked, Piedmont remains No. 2 in 3A, Ohatchee No. 5, Weaver No. 8; Oxford remains No. 2 in 6A, and Alexandria No. 5 in 5A.
