PRATTVILLE — Isabel Rogers was fighting off a summer cold Saturday, but nothing was going to keep her from a big day on the golf course Sunday.

The Anniston 11-year-old stayed alive in the national Drive, Chip & Putt skills competition when she won her subregional at RTJ-Capitol Hill Sunday.

Rogers won the girls 10-11 division with 104 total points and now is headed for TPC-Sawgrass Sept. 16 with a spot in the national finals at Augusta National the Sunday before the Masters on the line.

“I’m pretty excited,” she said.

Isabel, a sixth-grader at White Plains Middle School, got off to a slow start in driving, but made up for it with her chipping and putting – just like her dad Matt Rogers would do. She placed second in her division in and first in putting.

Her first drive was out of the scoring grid and her second barely stayed in, but she was right down the middle with her third attempt and scored 13 points.

“After the driving she said I’ve really got to make up my points on my putting and chipping,” her mother Stacy said.

Isabel’s first chip only scored one point, but each of her last two fell in the 2-4 feet zone and scored 15 points each.

Like everything in the game, it all came down to putting. She made her first putt, put the second inside the 20-point ring and put her third inside the 15-point ring.

“I was really proud of myself,” she said.

Isabel appeared in good shape to advance, but had to wait out a few more girls after she finished to secure the win. Runner-up Christine Chang had a chance to steal after holing her second putt, but scored only one point on her final attempt.

“We were holding our breath the whole time,” mom Stacy said.
