Junior skills event; ‘Dub’ pairings

County Golf Tour introduces local version of Drive, Chip & Putt; Dub Ellis Invitational pairings listed

By East Alabama Sports Today

A local, non-affiliated version of a growing national junior golf skills competition is being offered in Calhoun County later this months and organizers are hopeful of a big turnout.

The Calhoun County Drive, Chip and Putt Challenge is scheduled for July 27 at Cider Ridge Golf Club. It’s a free, one-day event for boys and girls aged 7 to 15.

“The goal is to promote golf in our county … and give some of our local juniors a chance to compete and maybe bring in new players who haven’t been a part of the national (version),” local organizer Matt Rogers said.

The national version of Drive, Chip and Putt is conducted at courses across the country with qualifiers advancing from the local level to regional competitions at some of the top facilities in the nation to the ultimate finals at Augusta National the Sunday before the Masters.

The local event will follow the same format as the national – three drives, three chips and three putts. Boys and girls will compete separately in four age divisions – 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15. Winners will receive medals for their success, but will not advance to any additional competition.

In time, it is hoped, there can be multiple qualifying locations funneling to one championship site.

Players are encouraged to pre-register for the Calhoun County DC&P Challenge can be done through its dedicated email address — calhoundcp@cableone.net — or Cider Ridge Golf Club. Check-in and practice on tournament day is 3-3:30 p.m. with competition expected to start shortly after 3:45 p.m. announcements.

DUB ELLIS INVITATIONAL: Here are the pairings for Saturday’s opening round of the Dub Ellis Invitational at Cherokee County CC.

Often wondered why the Calhoun County Golf Tour couldn’t/shouldn’t expand at this time of its success to become a Northeast Alabama Golf Tour and include this tournament and major Etowah County stroke-play events. The Tour already has expanded to include players from outside the county. Twenty percent of the Dub Ellis and Gadsden Invitational fields are Calhoun County Golf Tour players. If nothing else, these inclusions would be beneficial to mutual growth. End of commentary.
