Weaver, PV section winners

Weaver wins first boys sectional track title in nearly 20 years, Pleasant Valley wins girls, Ohatchee sets 2 records

By East Alabama Sports Today

FORT PAYNE – The Weaver boys won their first sectional track title in nearly 20 years, Pleasant Valley won the girls title and Ohatchee set two sectional records in the Class 3A Section 3 meet completed Saturday.

The Weaver boys, who last won a sectional track crown in 1998, won the title that eluded it a year ago with 167 points, 20 ahead of Pleasant Valley. The PV girls won their title going away, scoring 228.5 points; the Lady Raiders had their crown wrapped up by early Saturday morning.

“That’s awesome,” Weaver coach Marcus Herbert said.

“I guess coming from the standpoint of two years ago when I first took over and had a few qualifiers to last year’s runner-up and now sectional champion it’s awesome to see how they’ve grown and having actually people come along and join the program.”

PV’s Matisse Miller and Trinity Roberts were named sectional MVPs after scoring 40 points with four event wins. The Lady Raiders’ Rachel Faucett also won four events. Miller and Roberts both swept the 800, 1600 and 3200 races and were on their respective 4×800 relay teams.

Weaver was led by Robert Gaines, who scored 31 points with two seconds (high jump, triple jump) and a third (long) in his individual events and was on the winning 4×100 relay. Maurice Goodman (long jump), Gary Wallace (300 hurdles), Chris Lemon (100 hurdles) and Brandon Boyce (shot put) won individual gold.

“He’s just a heck of an athlete,” Herbert said of Gaines. “He can do anything he wants. If I could put him in all 16 events I would. He’s one of the those special kids who comes through your program only so often.”

The top five finishers in each event qualify for next week’s state championships in Cullman. The Bearcats qualified at least 21 athletes; last year they sent 19 and finished 10th at state.
“The sky’s the limit with these kids,” Herbert said. “I’m not going to say we can make a run at it and win, but you never know what can happen.”

Ohatchee javelin throwers Cameron Ray and Kourtney Shuler both set 3A sectional records in their events. Ray, who hadn’t thrown in a week since injuring his arm during the Calhoun County Meet, threw it 161 feet, 4 inches. Shuler threw it 98 feet.

CLASS 4A-5A SECTION 3: In the Class 4A and 5A Section Meet at Beauregard, Jacksonville’s girls edged White Plains by a half-point for second place behind winner Ashville in Class 4A.

Calhoun County event winners included White Plains pole vaulters Matthew Moore and Savannah Yates, White Plains’ 4×800 relay team, Anniston 4×400 relay team; Anniston’s Ladajah Williams (800) and Jacksonville’s Tatiyana Thomas (200).

These state qualifiers head to Gulf Shores.
