Falcons on the rise

Donoho edges Westbrook Christian, White Plains on home course in run-up to sectional tournament; Westbrook’s Catanzaro medalist

By East Alabama Sports Today

The Donoho golf team found a lot to like coming out of their final match before sectionals Thursday.

The Falcons won a three-team, nine-hole match at Anniston Country Club, posting 146 to edge two-time reigning Class 3A state champion Westbrook Christian (153) and Calhoun County champion White Plains (154).

Not only did the Falcons play well enough to beat one of the top teams in the state regardless of classification, they did so on the course where their sectional will be held next week.

“This is very big for our team, considering we played them (Westbrook Christian) the first match of the year and lost by 10 shots,” Donoho coach Garrett Burgess said. “This is a good group of boys and they are peaking at the right time to have a very successful next few weeks. You play off momentum and that’s what they are doing right now.”

Westbrook’s John Hilliard Catanzaro was medalist with a 32. Jack Svensen led Donoho with a 35. The Falcons also counted 37s by Jacob LeCroy, Harrison Hughston and Holden Abernathy.

Andrew Miller and Cameron McCareeth posted White Plains’ low rounds, 37

“Jack is the anchor of our team,” Burgess said. “If he plays well, he does a lot for the entire team. He has a very big impact. Although everyone has an impact he seems to bring out the best in everyone when he plays well.”
