Transfer Phillips makes successful debut at Alexandria; Oxford wins two games in Showdown at Choccolocco; White Plains continues to pound the ball

By East Alabama Sports Today

MADISON – Maggie Phillips’ debut with the Alexandria softball team Friday was a successful one as she pitched the Lady Cubs to an 8-4 victory over host Bob Jones.

Phillips transferred from Ohatchee at the start of spring break and, having not played for the Tribe this season, became eligible for the Lady Cubs in the middle of this week. Alexandria coach Brian Hess held her until the tournament and Phillips delivered a complete game in the circle, giving up six hits in six innings, two earned runs and striking out three. She also had an RBI single in the game’s decisive sixth inning.

Her arrival proved quite fortuitous for the Lady Cubs as Leighton Sparks has been taken out of the rotation due to an injury. Sparks still plays, just doesn’t pitch. She ripped a double that got their big inning started.

The Lady Cubs snapped a 3-3 tie with five runs in the sixth. L Irwin scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball and later that at-bat Timberlyn Shurbutt ripped an RBI double. Two more runs scored when Madi Snow’s grounder was misplayed into an error and Mattie Wade singled home the final run.

Shurbutt led off the game with a home run and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

In their other game in the tournament, the Lady Cubs lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins (Ky.) 12-3. Shurbutt went 3-for-3, while Allison Bonds and Leighton Sparks each had two hits.

Oxford 5, Pleasant Valley 3: Haley Lyner’s two-run double with two outs in the fourth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and propelled the Lady Jackets to victory in PV’s inaugural Showdown at Choccolocco. Lyner went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game. Ashlyn Miller also had two hits for Oxford. Kara Perry’s two-run homer helped stake PV to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. McKinley Parris drove in a run and Savannah Williams went 2-for-3.

Oxford 1, Cleburne County 0: JoJo Skinner allowed one hit over five innings and Haley Lyner drove home the game’s only run with a fifth-inning fielders choice. The only hit Skinner allowed was Tatiana Ervin’s two-out single in the fifth.
