BIRMINGHAM – When you get a chance to play at historic Rickwood Field you just don’t turn it down.

Ragland coach Rodney Lipscomb had a message Monday when his team got home from its sprint of a matinee game at St. Clair County. The call came from Ramsay asking if Lipscomb wanted to bring the Purple Devils down as a replacement game for an earlier rain-out on its schedule.

He couldn’t say yes fast enough. It turned out to be a good call, as the Purple Devils won 12-1 and all 23 players who made the trip got to play.

“These kids need to experience it and if they’re gonna go, they’re gonna play,” Lipscomb said. “It just happened to work out for us.”

Only two of their players had ever been in the park before, but this was their first time as players. Senior catcher Stoney Merritt was a fifth-grade batboy the last time Lipscomb took a team there and junior centerfielder Noah Hollingsworth was in the stands when his brothers played for Ragland.

Actually, it was a come-from-behind victory. Ramsay jumped out front 1-0 in the first inning, but then the Purple Devils (3-1) began chipping away and “the next thing you know,” Lipscomb said, “it was 12-1.”

Ragland used six pitchers in the game and all of them threw fewer than 25 pitches.

“It was a team thing,” Lipscomb said. “I thought it was a big win.”

Draven Campbell broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the second and the Lions never looked back. They broke it open with a five-run fifth highlighted by Green’s two-run single. Clark pitched the first six innings for the win, allowing four hits and striking out eight.
