Howell, Lyner keep Oxford unbeaten with big games; Cheek’s walk-off double lifts Faith to victory

OXFORD – Sarah Howell went 4-for-4, Haley Lyner had three hits and defensively they teamed up to cut down a runner at the plate in a close game as Oxford remained undefeated with a 6-2 victory over Lincoln Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.

Howell pounded two doubles among her hits and drove in a pair of runs. Bailey Clark went 2-for-2 and Shelby Hicks went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the third that gave Oxford the lead for good. Ashleigh Reaves had the Lady Jackets’ other hit.

Howell, the Lady Jackets’ catcher, stood her ground in the fourth inning and took Lyner’s throw from center field to cut down Lincoln’s Savannah Sands at the plate and preserve Oxford’s 3-2 lead. The Lady Jackets extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Howell and Lyner.

Rylee Waldrep got the win, giving up four hits and striking out six.

Faith Christian 5, Victory Christian 4

Erin Cheek lifted the Lady Lions to victory when she belted a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. It capped a big night for Cheek, as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Logan Boyd and Cornelia Simpson both had a pair of singles for the Lady Lions and Gabrielle Frechette drove in two runs.

Kristin Covington pitched the victory. She gave up only two hits and two earned runs.
