BIRMINGHAM – Faith Academy found the formula to shut down Talladega’s running offense and ended the Tigers’ season with a 53-40 loss in the Class 5A state semifinals.

Faith held the Tigers to their season-low in points and snapped their six-game winning streak in which they scored 95 points or more twice. The Rams will play Mae Jemison for the state title in the BJCC Legacy Arena Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Talladega’s previous season low was 47 points. The Tigers had been held to fewer than 50 points only three times and not since a 55-48 loss to Clay Central on Dec. 13. They had scored at least 60 points in their previous 10 games.

The Tigers (26-9) shot 13 of 47 from the floor in the game, 2 for 13 from 3-point range, and the Rams forced them into 20 turnovers. Jae-Lyn Russ was Talladega’s only scorer in double figures; he had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Robert Houston had eight points and eight boards.

Michael McGowan led Faith with 20 points and nine rebounds. Logan Foutz scored 19 points and Kaleb Jackson grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Talladega started fast, opening a 12-9 lead in the first quarter, but Faith (22-8) put together runs at the start of the second and third quarters to grab the lead.

The Rams scored the first nine points of the second quarter and held a 24-22 lead at halftime. Then scored the first seven of the third quarter to go up by nine.

It would’ve been a five-point lead at the break, but Ashton Duncan grabbed a steal and Jarvius McKenzie drained a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to make it a two-point game. The Tigers were down 24-16 with 1:13 left in the half when Duncan hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left, made the steal with 12 seconds left and fed McKenzie for the 3-pointer.

The Tigers were making their third appearance in the Final Four under coach Chuck Miller and first since 2009.

John Petty scored 36 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had seven assists to put the Jaguars (32-4) in position to win a third straight state title. The Jaguars will play the Faith Academy Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Petty, last year’s Mr. Basketball, was 14-of-22 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Jamar Jackson and Brandon McCarver added 13 points apiece on a combined 11-of-12 from the field. The Jaguars took control with a 26-10 second quarter after the teams played to a 9-9 tie in the first.

Khalil Pope led Sylacauga with 16 points, Darlan Garrett had 13 and Jasade Smith had 11.

CLASS 5A GIRLS
Wenonah 73, Sylacauga 50

The Lady Dragons (29-3) shot 70 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter and 53 percent for the game to reach the championship game for the fourth year in a row. They will go after their fourth straight title Saturday at 9 a.m. against Charles Henderson, a 70-53 winner over Arab.

Senior center Alexus Dye led the way with 24 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots; she shot 10 of 13 from the floor. Faith Reynolds added 16 points, three assists and four steals. Kourtnie Smith had 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. The Lady Dragons opened a 21-4 lead in the first quarter.
