Jackets open season with bang

Oxford wins three in baseball, two in softball; Syer has big day, Turner pitches one-hitter, Lloyd homers, Lyner’s bat powers softball

OXFORD — The opening day of Oxford’s 2017 baseball season couldn’t have gone much better.

Brody Syer had a big day at the plate, Nate Lloyd added to his legacy as the only high school player to homer in Choccolocco Park and the Yellow Jackets won all three games they played Monday.

The Jackets beat Russell County 7-3, Pelham 11-8 and Russellville 4-2.

The fifth inning was big for Oxford in all three games as it pushed across the go-ahead run in that inning each game.

Syer had two hits in each game, going 6-for-10 with five RBIs, and threw a complete-game three-hitter in the win over Russellville. His RBI triple broke a 2-2 tie in the Russellville game and his bases-loaded triple broke a 3-3 tie against Russell County.

Jaren Turner gave up one hit in a complete game against Russell County — a two-run double by Robert Miles in the first inning. Lloyd, who hit the first home run by a high school player in Choccolocco Park history last season, got one of the runs back with a homer in the bottom of the first.

The Jackets pounded 13 hits against Pelham. Brennan McCullough had three, while Turner, Syer and Jacob Sears had two apiece. Sears drove in three runs.

Munford 13, Childersburg 3: Draven Campbell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the Lions’ 12-hit attack. Marshall Clay, Zay Britt and Dakota Green all drove in two runs. Clark struck out nine in four innings to get the win.

SOFTBALL
Oxford 9, Cleburne County 1
Oxford 5, Cullman 3

OXFORD — Haley Lyner had three hits and four RBIs in the Cleburne County game and JoJo Skinner pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. Ashleigh Reaves and Shelby Hicks both had two RBIs in the game.

Lyner, Kaylynn Garrett and Amber Dempsey all had two hits against Cullman and Rylee Waldrep pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. Garrett also had two hits against Cleburne County.
