HOKES BLUFF — Sierra Stone and Kayla Broom both looked strong in their returns to the Jacksonville lineup and combined with three other scorers in double figures the Lady Golden Eagles routed Cherokee County 61-29 in the Class 4A Area 12 girls tournament Wednesday night.

Stone, a game-changing senior post who had been out with a fractured hip since Thanksgiving, scored eight points and grabbed 19 rebounds in 24 and a half minutes of action. Broom, an eighth-grader with a huge upside out with a fractured foot since early January, scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in about 15 minutes.

Both were cleared Monday. Both were exhausted after the game, what with only two days of practice behind them, but none worse for the wear.

“I’ve been joking around with them saying I’m sick of looking at you two sitting next to me on the bench, when are you coming back?” Jacksonville coach Tres Buzan said. “Be back for the area; that’s when we need you? It was awesome to find out they were cleared.

“They were both supposed to get checkups this weekend. If Kayla was on her early end (of recovery) and was cleared, she’d be back (for this game), but if she was on the late end, it would be another week. With Sierra, you were keeping your fingers cross to see what would happen. She was on crutches two months and we didn’t know how it was going to go.

“After all we lost this year and all the ups and downs, it was good timing on those two coming back. Sierra is not Sierra at 100 percent, but Sierra at 80 or 90 is better than most at 100. You don’t see her hit the full sprint and she’s still a little ginger, but I’ll take her at 80-90 over most. And Kayla moved great.”

Beyond what they bring to the box score, what their return does more than anything is give Buzan some quality depth at this most important time of the season where he can substitute “and not just fall off the table.”

While Stone and Broom were out, Jacksonville was down to just six regulars. Buzan said the Super Six has the Lady Golden Eagles playing “the best they’ve played all year” – they are riding a six-game winning streak — and in some respects playing through the hardship may benefit them in the long run.

Kyra Williams led Jacksonville Wednesday night with 18 points. Tatiyana Thomas and Aniya Jefferson had 10 points each. With Stone dominating inside, the Lady Golden Eagles outrebounded Cherokee County by almost a 2-to-1 margin (58-32) and held it to 18-percent shooting from the field (1-of-16 from 3-point range).

Because of the injuries that go even beyond Stone and Broom, the Lady Golden Eagles (17-9) have had to reinvent themselves several times during the season. Buzan said they “don’t change anything” now with the additional personnel.

“Those six are still going to get a lot of minutes,” he said. “I felt good going into tonight with just those six and having Sierra and Kayla now we have depth so let’s see how this plays out.”

The Lady Golden Eagles now play top-seeded host Hokes Bluff for the area tournament championship Friday at 7 p.m. guaranteed a spot in the Class 4A sub-regional opposite either Anniston or Handley. Hokes Bluff eliminated White Plains 51-37.
