Brazier’s bucket buoys Bulldogs

Boys roundup: Senior’s layup as time expires lifts Piedmont over Pleasant Valley and into area title game, subregion tournament

By East Alabama Sports Today

GLENCOE – Austin Brazier made a layup from the right side of the lane as time was expiring to give Piedmont a 42-41 victory over Pleasant Valley and help the Bulldogs avoid perhaps the biggest upset of the early rounds of area tournament play.

The Raiders had won only one game all season – and that came last week – but they gave the Bulldogs (14-14) all they could handle.

Piedmont put its game-winning play in motion after Lee Stanley’s steal with 24 seconds left. The Bulldogs worked the ball around and A.J. Fairs missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but he corralled the deep rebound and got it to Brazier who was momentarily alone on the right side.

PV’s Josh Faucett came over to defend, but Brazier got him up in the air and laid it in off the glass before the horn sounded.

Brazier finished with 14 points, five in the fourth quarter. Easton Kirk had 10 and Taylor Hayes had eight. Faucett led PV with 18 points.

The Bulldogs will play Glencoe at 7 p.m. Friday for the Class 3A Area 10 tournament championship. They already have earned a spot in the Class 3A subregion tournament, against either Weaver or Wellborn.

LINEVILLE – Davyn Flenord scored 14 of his game-high 17 points in the second half as the 10th-ranked Volunteers (22-3) pulled away for their 16th straight victory.

The Vols will now host Talladega Thursday at 7 p.m. for the area championship.

Flenord and Joe Bullock scored seven points apiece in the third quarter as the Vols stretched their four-point halftime lead to double digits entering the fourth quarter.

Bullock finished with 15 points. Camerun Peoples threw in 12 points.
