Oxford wins toss to host 6A Area 13 boys tournament; included is a listing of all the area basketball tournaments in and around Calhoun County. This will be updated as the fields are completed. Brackets for all the areas can be found when submitted at the AHSAA website.

PELL CITY — Joel Van Meter is getting pretty good at this coin flip thing.
For the third time in five years – all the odd-numbered years – the Oxford boys basketball coach has come out to the good on the coin toss for his area tournament – even when he doesn’t call it.
Tuesday morning the Yellow Jackets won the coin toss with Southside-Gadsden for the No. 1 seed and right to host next week’s Class 6A Area 13 boys tournament.
Van Meter also won tosses in 2013 and 2015.
“I never really lost one,” he said. “The thing is you don’t call it, you let somebody else call it. He called tails and it was heads. Just the luck of the draw.”
With the result, Southside will play Pell City in the Oxford Sports Arena Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will play the winner on Feb. 9 at 7 with a spot in the sub-regional against an Area 12 representative already guaranteed.
“That’s the thing more than anything,” Van Meter said. “You automatically get to the sub-region game.
“We had the same opportunity and didn’t do what we were supposed to do. It shows how important it is to win that (area championship) game so you can play at home in that sub-region game.”
The girls’ race didn’t have such drama. Southside will host and await the winner of the Feb. 6 Oxford-Pell City game for the area championship.
