BIRMINGHAM – White Plains junior Matthew Moore won the Class 1A-5A high school pole vault and the Wildcats’ combined track program set seven school records at the MLK Indoor Track Classic Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Moore, last year’s Calhoun County pole vault runner-up and a former sectional champion, vaulted a school-record 12 feet to win Monday’s event. He edged out three other vaulters for the gold.

“It was a great feeling when I found out I won,” he said. “Very few things compare to that level of excitement and happiness.”

Moore also was part of the school-record-setting 4×200 relay (1:39.77).

Presley Whitten, competing in her first season of indoor, set school records in the long jump (15-1 1/2) and triple jump (31-15) and qualified for the state meet in the high jump. Ryleigh Randall set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles (10.91) and the girls set records in the 4×800 (11:27.56) and 4×200 (2:00.05) relays.

In all, the Wildcats had 14 qualify for the state meet. They included Dalton Kelley (60), James Elrod (high jump, triple jump), the boys 4×400 relay, Savannah Yates (pole vault, 60) and Madeline Weathington (400).

Meanwhile, Sacred Heart’s Raegan Green won the 1A-5A girls 60 hurdles (9.50), long jump (16.5) and triple jump (38-4.75). Two-time state champion Rachel Faucett led a 1-3-4 Pleasant Valley finish in the 1A-5A girls high jump (5-0).

WRESTLING

MADISON – Alexandria’s Christian Knop won his weight division, Weaver’s Nick Souder suffered his first loss of the season in his championship match and their finished 11th and eighth, respectively, at the Dick Clem Invitational at Bob Jones High School.

Knop remained undefeated and pinned the top-ranked wrestler in Class 6A, Athens’ Thomas Carter, in 1:20 to win the 184-pound class. It was his fourth pin of the meet.
He is now 38-0 and is current winning streak stands at 94.

Souder had his winning streak snapped at 109 when he lost his first match of the season in the 128-pound final to Gabe Hixenbaugh of Thompson, 12-5. Souder is now 47-1.

Weaver’s Caleb Allison made it to the podium when he finished third in 222. Alexandria’s Fletcher Swindall was third at 122, while teammates Gannon Womack and Jaden New were fourth at 140 and 108, respectively.
