It’s raining 3s

Alexandria falls in Glencoe final under barrage of Boaz 3-pointers

By East Alabama Sports Today

GLENCOE – The boys championship game of this year’s Glencoe Holiday Shoot-Out might just be remembered as the night it rained 3s inside the gym.

Alexandria ran into a red-hot shooting machine as Boaz drained 16 3-pointers on its way to a 66-50 victory and the title.

The Pirates scored only 31 points when the teams played earlier this season — a 20-point Alexandria win — but had that many on 3-pointers Friday shortly after halftime.

“They were stroking it tonight,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “Their coach said occasionally they’ll get like that. Well, they had their night tonight.”

The Valley Cubs even hit seven 3-pointers themselves, but it paled in comparison to what the Pirates were doing. Boaz had five players with at least one 3-pointer and leading scorer Brian Montgomery (27) had six. The Pirates had only two 2-point baskets all game.

“Usually when somebody gets close to 10 you think they shot it well,” Johnson said. “To put up that many 3s was amazing a team could stay that hot for that long a time.”

This won’t be the last the Valley Cubs will see of them. The teams meet again in an area game Tuesday night.
