OXFORD — Three frantic shots in the last 10 seconds failed to go down and the horn sounded before it could get up a fourth and Oxford lost a 62-61 heartbreaker to Central of Clay County Monday night at the Sports Arena.

The Lady Jackets led 58-57 with three minutes to go before Aunyah Denny hit one her six 3-pointers to put the Vols’ up 60-58. Tremeria Britt put the Lady Jackets back ahead with a traditional three-point play at 61-60 before Denny’s steal and a layup with 38 seconds left to put Clay Central ahead for good.

It was a see-saw first half that saw the Lady Jackets get off to a quick 7-3 lead only to have the Volunteers go on an 11-point run to open up a 22-16 lead early in the second quarter. Oxford answered with a 10-3 run to regain the lead at 26-25. Denny buried two of her three first-half 3s down the stretch to give the Vols a 32-30 halftime lead.

Tremeria Britt had 19 points for the Lady Jackets. She scored nine straight points on three 3s to put Oxford on top 51-50 early in the fourth quarter.
