Bearcats open with sweep

Weaver opens its wrestling season with victories over Ashville, Ranburne; 7 wrestlers pick up a pair of pins

By East Alabama Sports Today

WEAVER – The Weaver wrestling team got its season off to a better start than a year ago when the Bearcats beat Ashville 60-18 and Ranburne 45-30 in a pair of dual matches Friday night.

A year ago the Bearcats opened their season with a split, which coach Andy Fulmer still hasn’t completely gotten over.

On this night, eight Weaver wrestlers hit the mat twice and came away with two wins. Cody Souder (106), Dylan DeLoach (113), two-time reigning state champion Nick Souder (126), Christian Pettus (132), Taylor Ward (138), Drake Monroe (145) and Kyle Clapper (170) all posted a pair of pins. Caleb Russell (220) picked up a decision and a pin.

Nick Souder extended his carry-over winning streak to 65 straight matches.

“We fielded a lot of new faces and had a couple holes in the lineup, but we wrestled really good overall,” Fulmer said.

The team seemed to get a boost when former Bearcat state champion made his way to the gym, visiting after just finishing up Marine Corps boot camp.

“He came in between the first and second match and when he walked in, all our kids took off and ran over to him,” Fulmer said. “When he got here it made our guys perk up a little bit.”
