Handley wins 4A

Big plays power Tigers past Madison Academy for second state championship

By East Alabama Sports Today

AUBURN — Quarterback Rhett Fetner threw for 232 yards and two long touchdown plays as Handley opened a big halftime lead and crushed Madison Academy 30-7 at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the Class 4A state championship.

The Tigers (13-2) lost their first two games this season, then ran the table for their second state crown. They beat Madison Academy for the title in 2011.

Fetner, who’s also a high profile baseball prospect, completed nine of 18 passes. He had a 75-yard touchdown pass to Malik Meadows in the first quarter and a 68-yard touchdown pass to Christion Allen in the second. Allen later scored on a 20-yard fumble return.

The Tigers scored three touchdowns in the final 4:45 of the second quarter to open a 30-0 halftime lead.

The Tigers held the Mustangs (11-4) to minus-11 yards net rushing. With the Mustangs unable to get the running game going, two quarterbacks combined on 9-of-35 passes for 197 yards.
