OXFORD — A 15-point lead shrunk to eight late in the third quarter and the game’s momentum appeared to have shifted the other way, but Zondrick Garrett would have none of it.

The 6-foot-5 Oxford freshman took matters into his own hands, scoring 11 consecutive points to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a 59-45 win over Childersburg at the Oxford Sports Arena Tuesday night.

Garrett’s dazzling display of shots included a tomahawk dunk off of a drive to the basket and a 3 he buried from the top of the key. He ended up with 18 points and six rebounds before fouling out.

“This showed us how good Z can be and what his future holds,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “We have so many players that we sometimes forget he is there. Tonight he showed us some of that potential.”

The deeply talented Yellow Jackets (2-1) bolted to a 23-10 lead in the first quarter with Jerod Guthrie and Markise Davis knocking home two 3-pointers apiece. Both had eight points in the opening quarter.

Childersburg (4-2) would not go away, however, and began to chip away at the lead by making 14 free throws in the game and nailing four 3-pointers before Garrett took over late in the third quarter.

“We have a lot of pieces,” said Van Meter. “We are still trying to learn how to slow down, but we held a good team to just 45 points tonight. I was very pleased with the play of Braden Mack. He was strong on the boards and did a lot of good things.”

Mack had five points and five rebounds. Guthrie ended up with 12 points and Davis had 10 points and seven boards.

ROCKFORD – Ashton Duncan and Chaztin Tanner both hit big baskets to give the Tigers the lead with less than a minute left and Ashton ripped down the rebound on a last-second Coosa shot to preserve the victory.

The Tigers trailed 50-43 going into the fourth quarter. Tyrese Scales sparked their comeback with a 3-pointer.

Duncan finished with 21 points and Fred Dickerson had 10 to lead the Tigers. Jarvis McKenzie hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter for all his points in the game.
